According to a recent RTI-based investigation:

Over 1.27 crore bedroll items (bedsheets, blankets, pillows, pillow covers, and towels) were stolen from Indian Railways' AC coaches between January 2022 and May 2026.

The estimated loss is more than ₹104 crore.

Face towels were the most frequently stolen item, followed by bedsheets and pillow covers.

Thefts increased by 56% between 2022 and 2025.

The Railways is strengthening monitoring through CCTV, better tracking of linen, and stricter enforcement to curb such thefts.
