Skyroot Aerospace has successfully launched Vikram-1, making history with India's first privately developed orbital rocket. The launch took place on 18 July 2026 from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre, Sriharikota.
Key highlights:
Mission: Mission Aagaman
Rocket: Vikram-1 (about 22 m tall)
Orbit achieved: Approximately 450 km Low Earth Orbit in around 15 minutes.
Payloads: Multiple customer satellites and technology demonstration payloads were successfully deployed.
Why this is significant:
It is the first successful orbital launch by an Indian private company.
India becomes only the third country where a private company has independently achieved orbital launch capability.
The mission validates Skyroot's technologies, including 3D-printed rocket engines and advanced guidance systems, opening the door for future commercial satellite launches.
This is widely regarded as one of the biggest milestones for India's private space sector since it was opened to private companies in 2020.
